There are a wide variety of reasons why someone might need to relocate the factory backup camera from within the tailgate handle of the 2021-2024 Ford F-150. Aftermarket components like service bodies, utility equipment like salt spreaders and fifth-wheel towing, and even accessories like swing-out tire carriers and slide-in campers, often times result in the removal of the tailgate, removal of the entire truck bed, or result in the obstruction of the factory camera to where its original purpose of allowing a driver to see behind their large truck is diminished.
Aftermarket installers now have a solution to provide their customers in order to keep full backup camera or around-view camera functionality while adding new equipment to their F-150. But understanding which options the vehicle is equipped with is important in selecting the right components.
Below you will find multiple products all intended to allow someone to retain camera functionality whether they have a traditional analog camera, which connects to the vehicle's wiring harness at the back of the truck with a large 12-pin connector, or a digital camera (part of Ford's 360-Degree Camera Package and digital non-360 backup camera system), also known as LVDS, which connects at the rear of the truck with a small single-pin connector. First, please use the images below to help determine the right connector type on your 2021-2024 F-150.
Once you have determined the connector type on your F-150, you need to then decide which camera relocation components are right for your needs.
If you have found the 12-pin connector on the underside of the truck, Rostra offers a 5-meter harness with the same OE-style plug and ten different camera options (listed below in the Analog Tailgate Camera Relocation Systems for the 2021 Ford F-150 with Manually-Lowering Tailgate section). Click any one of the ten cameras listed to view the camera's specifications as well as see the part number for the harness and camera combination. These kits are completely plug-and-play and ready to deliver video to your in-dash monitor once plugged in. View Rostra's Ford F-150 analog tailgate camera relocation kits below.
If the truck is equipped with Ford's 360-Degree Camera Package, or a digital non-360 camera, you will have found the single-pin LVDS connector. Rostra offers three different types of LVDS backup camera relocation kits to suit installer's needs with the following features:
Rostra's relocation housings are custom-designed fixtures meant to accept the original camera from your F-150's tailgate. These housings mount to any flat surface with a combination of automotive-grade VHB tape and machine screws and are designed to angle the camera in such a way that it approximates the original camera view on your truck's in-dash monitor. These housings are ideal for use when the installer wants to remove the original camera from the tailgate handle and the camera will be installed in about the same position as it was when inside the tailgate handle originally and doesn't require an extension harness. View Rostra's Ford F-150 tailgate camera relocation housings below.
Rostra's relocation housings with extension harnesses include the custom relocation housing mentioned above but include a 5-meter LVDS extension harness. These kits are for use when the installer wants to remove the original camera from the tailgate handle but the camera will be installed further away from its original position in the tailgate. The housing provides a sturdy mounting point for the camera while the extension harness provides the needed length to locate the camera further away from the middle of the tailgate. Rostra's combination relocation housing, extension harness, and original equipment backup camera kits provide the ultimate solution to camera relocation. These kits are perfect for when the installer doesn't want to bother with removing the original camera from a truck's tailgate, or for when the truck was delivered as a cab & chassis model with no backup camera. Again, the housing provides a sturdy mount for the camera while the extension harness provides the needed length to locate the camera wherever the installer wants on the back of the truck.
